Dear MoMo Lusaka delegate,

On behalf of Mobile Monday Lusaka and implementing partner BongoHive, we would like to thank those of you present yesterday for contributing to making our 2nd MoMo Lusaka event on 25 June 2012 another great MoMo meeting for learning, interaction and networking.

Our theme of the evening was “Local Content and Apps Development in Zambia”, a pressing subject indeed. Mulenga Kapwepwe, artist and author, started out with an entertaining speech on the practical use of applications proving that apps can really be useful in the local perspective, “fireworks”… Cathy Phiri, Media365, added to this understanding and generously shared with us some of her experiences from MTV and the media content side, “content is king”…. Boyd Chipeta, Airtel Zambia, took us on a tour for understanding how a locally developed app could be successful within Airtel’s business model. And Mathews Mwewa, Ericsson, by presenting DDS– a key feature in Ericsson’s billing system – showed us how a garage product from Soweto can become a technical solution with global reach. Thanks to all of the mentioned speakers and to Lukonga Lindunda and Simunza Muyangana, BongoHive, for valuable comments and elegant moderation of the meeting.

Thanks again to TopFloor, for hosting the event in TopFloor’s wonderful premises. And thanks to Airtel Zambia for sponsoring the bar and snacks, making the networking session into the efficient and relaxed meeting arena we are seeking.

It is probably no understatement that most of us left the meeting with a refreshed “follow your passion” and “just do it” state of mind.

Please send in or post your photos from the evening. Follow any updates on facebook.com/mobilemondaylusaka and www.momolusaka.com (to be up and running shortly).

Our third Mobile Monday event is likely to be held in September. Please contact us if you would like to participate in the planning of upcoming events.

Zambia’s president Michael Sata appealing to the international business community to venture into Zambia. There are indeed opportunities here. Here is a summary of Mr Sata’s message:

This is a very broad and easily digested outline of business opportunities in southern Africa from April 2012. Zambia is among the countries analyzed and Zambia is given proper attention and accurate scores in the overview of attractiveness of opportunities. However, I would reinforce two aspects of business opportunities in Zambia:

- The Zambian ICT and telecoms sector is thriving with challenges and opportunities. We are seeing many signs that mobile money, mHealth and mLearning are sectors which are really taking off right now, not to mention the need for local apps and solutions development.

- The Zambian health sector offers many opportunities in respect of supply of technical devices within the recently realized needs to develop treatment for non-communicable diseases, such as cancer, diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.

Internationally recoginzed swedish minister of finance, Mr Anders Borg, was in Lusaka in the end of May 2012 and commented on the fact that seven out of the ten fastest growing economies in the world are in Africa.

“Africa is the new China”, Anders Borg was quoted in the Swedish daily newspaper Svenska Dagbladet, and further “I am convinced that the new economic wonder will come from Africa”.

Anders Borg visited Zambia, Tanzania and South Africa during a six-day trip to southern Africa in the end of May 2012 .

A balanced editorial appeared in Swedish daily newspaper Dagens Nyheter commenting on how to understand the positive economic development in Southern Africa:
